DAVIS, Calif. -
The 2017 season is finally here now that UC Davis has arrived to Albuquerque, site of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, hosted by New Mexico. This event is a familiar one for the Aggies since they have competed in this tournament every season since head coach Anna Temple took the helm of the program in 2012.

Eighteen teams will participate in this 54-hole stroke play event; 36 holes are on Monday’s schedule, with the final 18 taking place the following day. Four of UC Davis’ five scores each round will count towards the team’s overall standing.

In last year’s Invitational, then freshman Yoonhee Kim ended her inaugural tournament as an Aggie with a 67 in the final round, capping a weekend that saw her finish tied for 15th and post the team’s lowest individual score.

This year’s lineup features another two returning sophomores in Rei Nakatani and Christine Danielsson, players responsible for the team’s third- and fourth-lowest individual results last year.

Rounding out Coach Temple’s young lineup are freshmen Hannah Sun and Madison Wood, a pair of players making their collegiate debut at New Mexico, and two of four first-year players that comprises this year’s roster.

In addition to the tournament’s host, other teams heading to the desert this weekend include Arizona, California, Central Arkansas, Colorado, Denver, Fresno State, Iowa, Iowa State, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, San Diego State, Stanford, Texas, UNLV and Washington State.

Of this group, seven are ranked in the Golfweek’s Preseason Top 30 by Lance Ringler: Stanford (2), Northwestern (No. 6), Texas (11), Arizona (14), Cal (22), Oklahoma State (24) and Pepperdine (25)

This year marks the 39th edition of the Invitational, which became a separate tournament in 1979, after the New Mexico women’s squad co-hosted the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate with the Lobo men’s team from 1956-78. Highlighted by their second-place finish in 2012 and third in 2014, the Aggies will make their sixth-straight appearance in Albuquerque this week.

Providing a small-town community feel while providing a world-class academic experience, UC Davis is home to more than 37,000 students and centrally located between San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, and the Napa Valley. The No. 6-ranked public university in the nation according to the Wall Street Journal, and among the top 10 public universities nationwide according to U.S. News and World Report, UC Davis offers nearly 100 graduate programs and more than 100 academic majors across four colleges and six professional schools, ranking among the world and nation's best in numerous disciplines, including veterinary science, agriculture, and plant and animal programs.
