VAIL, Colo. - Eighteen women's golf teams including UC Davis, each representing a different conference, comprise a highly competitive tournament field this week that will battle it out at the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Red Sky Club's Fazio Course in Vail, Colo.

UC Davis is representing the Big West Conference at the event for the third consecutive year, nearly capturing it last year before finishing second to champion Oklahoma by five shots. The Aggies were fourth in 2011. The Sooners returns this season along with national powers UCLA, Florida State and Pepperdine, among others.

UC Davis will begin the event by teeing off at 9:45 a.m. (Pacific) on Monday and will play with Oklahoma and Denver. Other teams entered include South Florida, Pepperdine, Nebraska, Campbell, Tulsa, San Jose State, Georgia State, East Tennessee State, Missouri State, San Diego State, Furman, UTSA and Ole Miss.

Teams will play 18 holes each day from Monday through Wednesday.

For UC Davis, the tournament is the second one of the 2012-13 season, coming on the heels at last week's opener at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the University of New Mexico. The Aggies, under new head coach Anna Temple, finished the event strong, rallying to tie for second. Senior Amy Simanton led the way with a tie for fourth-place individual finish.

UC Davis will use the same quintet for the second consecutive week with veterans Simanton, Demi Runas, Beverly Vatananugulkit and Blair Lewis joining freshman Andrea Wong. The four returners participated in the Golfweek Conference Challenge last season as well with Vatananugulkit finishing tied for fifth, Runas tying for eighth and Simanton posting a top-20 showing with her tie for 19th.

The Aggies held a three-stroke lead after the first day and then dipped to fifth before a strong finish earned them runner-up honors.

UC Davis will take a break following the tournament until traveling to the Windy City Classic at Northwestern on Oct. 1 and 2.
