IRVINE, Calif. - Sophomore Betty Chen won her first collegiate tournament last month at the Hoosier Fall Invitational at Indiana University. Thursday, she added another new honor when she was named the Big West Conference Women's Golfer of the Month for October.
Chen, who is from Castro Valley, received the accolade after posting a 3-under 210 score at the tournament, winning by two shots over Carmen Laguna of Minnesota. The two golfers were the only players in the 96-competitor field that finished under par. She opened with a 72 before carding scores of 2-under 69 in each of the last two rounds.
The medalist finish was Chen's third top-10 placing of her Aggie career and her second this fall. She tied for seventh at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at New Mexico in September. Chen added a tie for 26th place at Washington's Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational and a tie for 32nd at the Stanford Invitational which were both contested in October as well.
Chen averaged 72.8 strokes over the three tournaments and currently leads the team with a 73.8 scoring average.
UC Davis is currently on a break from its 2013-14 schedule and will resume action at Stanford's Peg Barnard Invitational in February.
