BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior Alexis Brown led UC Davis in three events plus the all-around while sophomore Yasmine Yektaparast and senior co-captain Yonni Michovska also hit 3-for-3 in their respective events, helping the Aggies amass a third-place 193.875 at the NorCal Classic collegiate gymnastics meet at California's Haas Pavilion Monday night.
The 10th-ranked host Golden Bears won the meet at 195.325 while Sacramento State finished second with a 194.475 total. No. 11 Stanford placed fourth at 193.250 with San Jose State finishing fifth with a 192.600.
"I was extremely impressed with how this group performed tonight," said Aggie head coach John Lavallee. "They were very focused and able to make some on-the-spot adjustments to save some routines. For as injured as we have been the last few weeks, they really did an excellent job today. That was a much better score than I thought we would have. They really exceeded expectations."
Brown scored a 9.800 on uneven bars to open the meet, delivered a 9.775 on balance beam, suffered a fall and an out-of-bounds deduction on floor to slip to 9.150, then finished her night with a 9.825 on vault. She finished with a 38.550 total for her first all-around performance since her freshman year. Brown also placed fifth in the overall beam competition for her team's highest individual finish in any event. Her vault tied her for seventh in the meet while her bars effort placed her in a three-way chop for ninth.
Yektaparast posted 9.725 scores on vault and floor with a 9.625 on balance beam. Michovska went 9.725 on bars, 9.625 on floor and 9.750 on vault. Sophomore Aya Suzuki scored a 9.750 on floor in the opening rotation then made her collegiate debut of 9.700 on beam. Junior Amanda Presswood made her first career appearance in the beam lineup with a 9.625, then hit 9.750 on floor in the next rotation.
Senior co-captain Emma Hicks also made her first lineup appearance, posting a 9.625 on vault in the final rotation.
The Aggies scored 48.700 on each of vault and bars, a 48.400 on beam and a 48.075 on floor to compile their 193.875 score. Impressively, they competed despite three returning all-conference honorees limited to just one event: senior co-captain Katy Nogaki (beam), junior Miranda Holder (floor) and sophomore Kara Jones (vault) each appeared in just one lineup, but all three hit their routines.
Sacramento State's Julia Konner won the individual all-around at 38.975. Stanford's Elizabeth Price captured meet titles on each of vault (9.950) and bars (9.950). Cal's Desiree Palomares and Sofie Seilnacht shared the beam title at 9.875, while Golden Bear teammate Toni-Ann Williams led the way on floor at 9.925.
UC Davis returns to action on Friday in a home quadrangular with Stanford, Boise State and Yale. Meet time is 7 p.m. at the Pavilion.
