DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Katie Yamamura won the individual floor exercise with a 9.750 and placed second in the all-around standings at 38.575 to lead UC Davis to a 191.000 team total in a season-opening collegiate gymnastics quadrangular at the Pavilion Sunday afternoon. The Aggies placed second in the meet behind San Jose State's 191.800. Cal State Fullerton took third with a 188.000 tally, while Wisconsin-Whitewater was fourth at 181.725.

UC Davis opens the year with a 2-1 record.

Yamamura was her team's lone event-winner, edging teammate Erika Van Dyke's 9.725 for the floor title. She also hit 9.600 on balance beam to tie for second place, and scored 9.700 on vault as part of the Aggies' 48.425 in the opening rotation.

Senior Michelle Bobonski led UC Davis on vault with a 9.800 to place third in the meet. Lida Gehlen posted a 9.775 on uneven bars to finish second, just ahead of teammate Tanya Ho's 9.750, which was part of a three-way tie. Ho also finished third in the all-around with a 37.925 total.

In addition to Yamamura and Van Dyke claiming the top two scores on floor, senior Kendall McCann delivered a 9.625 for fourth place and Ho went 9.600 for fifth. Collectively, the Aggies finished the meet with a 48.250 on that apparatus to help offset a 46.175 on beam in the third rotation.

San Jose State's Thomasina Wallace won the all-around with a 38.700, helped by a first-place 9.925 on uneven bars. She also hit 9.825 on vault to share that event title with teammate Lily Swann. Cami Casimere claimed the beam win for Cal State Fullerton with her 9.675 effort. UWW's highest finisher was Justine Weyer, who scored a 9.750 on vault for a share of fourth place.

 

 

Yamamura was one of three UC Davis freshmen making their collegiate debuts. Taryn West went 9.525 as the leadoff entry on vault, while Michelle Ho went 9.500 on bars and 9.550 as an exhibition on floor.

The Aggies return to action in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation road dual meet at Seattle Pacific on Friday.
