DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Tanya Ho won the individual vault and balance beam to lead UC Davis to a 187.875 in a women's collegiate gymnastics dual meet at the Pavilion Friday. The visiting San Jose State spoiled the Aggies' season opener with a winning score of 189.450.

The meet also represents the UC Davis debut for first-year head coach John Lavallee.

Ho scored a 9.850 on vault as part of a school-record team score of 48.875 in the first rotation. She led a 1-2-3 Aggie sweep on the apparatus, as senior Carrie Lujan scored a 9.825 and co-captain Brandi Forte went 9.775 for third place.

Ho also hit 9.700 to edge Spartan sophomore Alise Blackwell's 9.625 on balance beam. UC Davis had all four event winners, as freshman Lida Gehlen posted the meet's top uneven bars mark of 9.750, then Andi Dolinsky hit 9.600 on floor exercise in the leadoff position of the fourth rotation.

UC Davis held a 95.700 to 94.975 lead over the Spartans at the midway point, helped greatly by its sweep on vault. The deficit was cut to 142.025 to 141.875 through three rotations as SJSU compiled a 46.900 on floor exercise, while the Aggies counted three misses en route to a 46.325 on beam.

The Spartans finished the meet with a 47.575 on beam, picking up a 9.625 from Blackwell and a 9.525 from sophomore Veronica Porte. Meanwhile, UC Davis went 45.850 on floor exercise after Dolinsky and sophomore Adee Schoffman (9.425) put the squad to a strong start.

Blackwell won the individual all-around with a 38.050 aggregate, just ahead of Aggie junior and 2006 USAG champion Michelle Kulovitz, who posted 37.750. Porte was the meet's only other all-around. Her finish on beam helped her toward a 37.275 four-event total.

The Aggies head to Seattle Pacific on January 19 for their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation dual meet.
