Chan Shares Vault, Floor Win In Season Opener At Cal

BERKELEY, CAlif. - Senior Tiffany Chan shared the individual titles on both vault and floor exercise to help propel UC Davis to a second-place team score of 187.375 in a women's collegiate gymnastics triangular meet at Haas Pavilion Friday evening. Chan scored a 9.650 on vault and a 9.700 on floor.

Host UC Berkeley won the meet at 191.850 while Brown finished third at 179.950. The Aggies begin the 2005 season with a 1-1 mark.

Sophomore Joanne Pizzo scored a total of 28.525 points in her three events. She led the Aggies on balance beam with a 9.525, added a 9.425 on floor exercise, then finished her evening with a third-place 9.575 on vault.

"I thought the attitude was good. We were aggressive and I didn't see a lot of nervousness," said UC Davis head coach Ray Goldbar. "We put a lot of effort into everything. We had some bounces on the double backs but at least we were going hard at them.

The Aggies opened the meet with a 45.500 on beam, suffering five falls from the apparatus and counting two toward the final score. However, Chan's floor performance pushed her team above the 47-point barrier then the vault squad enjoyed its strong third rotation.

Redshirt freshman Carrie Lujan led off the vault at 9.450, then Hanna Anderson followed with a 9.475. Pizzo's 9.575, freshman Michelle Kulovitz's 9.500 and Chan's winning mark compiled a 47.650 team score in the event, helping the team solidify its second-place position over the Bears.

Sophomore Brandi Forte's leadoff 9.550 was the highest for the uneven bars in the fourth and final rotation. Carolyn Kampf contributed a 9.525 in the second slot of the lineup. Defending USAG bars co-champ Nicole Doherty posted a 9.625 in exhibition for the highest-scoring Aggie bars routine.

 

 

Cal's My-Lan Dodd won the individual all-around with a 38.775 total. She also led a Golden Bear sweep inthe balance beam, winning that event at 9.800; and placed second on bars with a 9.875. Teammate Miho Maeda also won two events, capturing the bars at 9.900 and sharing the floor title at 9.700.

UC Davis returns to action on January 22 for a four-team meet at Denver University.
