DAVIS, Calif. - Spartan junior Veronica Porte scored a 38.700 to capture the individual all-around to lead San Jose State to a winning score of 192.350 in a four-team women's collegiate gymnastics meet at UC Davis Friday. The host Aggies placed second at 188.625, Seattle Pacific finished third with a 183.875 and Springfield was fourth at 178.925.

UC Davis improves to 3-2 for the season.

Sophomore Tanya Ho was the Aggies' top finisher, scoring 9.700 to share third place on vault. Senior Michelle Kulovitz was fifth on that event with a 9.650 score, helping UC Davis post a 48.000 in the opening rotation. Ho added a second-place 9.725 on bars and a fourth-place 9.625 on floor exercise, while freshman Stacey Nicolini was sixth on balance beam with a 9.475.

Nicolini also finished among the all-around leaders, compiling a third-place score of 37.575 in her four events. Alise Blackwell placed second in the all-around behind her teammate Porte, scoring a four-event sum of 37.850.

UC Davis and San Jose State battled to a close meet through two rotations. The Aggies added a 47.375 on bars to hold a 95.375 at the midway point. The Spartans opened with 48.150 on bars then picked up a 47.500 on beam for a 95.650 halftime total.

However, the Spartans broke away in the third rotation with a 48.300 on floor exercise, while UC Davis counted four falls in a disappointing 46.475 on beam. SJSU finished with a 48.400 on vault, helped by respective 9.750 and 9.725 by Raylyn and Shina Cardeno. The Aggies put up a 46.775 on floor, getting Ho's 9.625 and a 9.550 by freshman Ashley Lachman.

Seattle Pacific also finished strong after short-handed scores of 43.175 on floor and 46.300 on vault. Seniors Ashley Domres (9.575) and Christie Chinaka (9.500) finished second and third, respectively, on balance beam to lead the Falcons to a 47.250 in the final rotation.

 

 

Springfield posted its highest marks on vault, totalling a 46.575 in that event. Sophomore Jeanne Bradle scored a 9.475 and junior Jenna Williams chipped in a 9.450 to lead the Pride.

The Aggies return to action on January 25 in a locally televised meet at Alaska Anchorage.
