Brown captures all-around title in home opener

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Alexis Brown tied for the meet title on uneven bars, won balance beam outright, and went on to capture the all-around with a 39.250, helping UC Davis to a second-place 194.200 in a collegiate gymnastics quadrangular at the Pavilion on Friday. West Virginia won the meet overall at 195.050, while UIC placed third with a 193.025 score.

The Aggies move to 3-4 for the year.

Brown took part in a four-way tie for the win on bars with a 9.850, then matched that score to edge teammate Kelley Hebert on beam. The animal science major from Huntington Beach also tied for second place on vault at 9.800, then anchored the floor exercise squad with a 9.750.

Meanwhile, Hebert tied her career high with a 38.950 in the all-around, good for third in the meet. She accounted for four of the 14 UC Davis routines performed by freshmen. Kyla Kessler, another of the Aggie first-years in the lineup, made her collegiate all-around debut. She had scores of 9.750, 9.700 and 9.725 on vault through beam but suffered a fall on floor.

In addition to the freshman crew, junior Roxanna Agah made her Aggie lineup debut with a 9.675 on floor exercise. Another junior, Aya Suzuki, bolstered bars and beam with scores of 9.750 and 9.725, respectively. Freshman Alyssa Ito also enjoyed a solid evening with scores of 9.700 on vault and bars.

Hebert also led the Aggies on floor exercise, finishing in a tie for fifth with a 9.775 effort. As a team, UC Davis compiled a season-high 48.575 on vault, matched its year's best with a 48.800 on bars, then established a new season high of 48.825 on beam.

UIC posted the meet's best bars night with a 49.125, while WVU broke the 49-point barrier with its 49.075 in the third rotation.

This is the first of three straight Friday home meets for the Aggies. They host Stanford, San Jose State and Seattle Pacific for a quadrangular on February 2.
