SEATTLE, Wash. --- Michelle Naito and Nicole Doherty scored career highs on balance beam with marks of 9.875 and 9.800, respectively, but UC Davis' team score of 187.375 was unable to surpass host Seattle Pacific in a women's collegiate gymnastics dual meet at Brougham Pavillion Friday. The Falcons managed a 188.200 to edge the Aggies by less than a full point.
Naito was one of three event winners for UC Davis as Doherty captured her second straight all-around win with a 37.475 total and Vanessa Baume hit a season-best 9.725 on vault to win that event. Naito also finished second on floor exercise for the Aggies, scoring a 9.600.
The Falcons opened with a solid 47.575 on vault, placing the next five performers behind Baume. UC Davis struggled with a 45.825 on uneven bars, although senior Lynn Schwaebe managed a third-place 9.575 on that apparatus. SPU had troubles of its own on uneven bars, scoring a 45.700, while Baume's mark was the Aggies only highlight on vault. UC Davis scored 46.100 on vault as the Falcons led 93.275 to 91.925 at the midway point.
Naito scored her second-place floor squad in the No. 3 position of the floor lineup. Nicole Doherty placed third on floor at 9.550 as UC Davis went for a 47.225 in that rotation. Then the Aggies enjoyed a 48.225-point performance on beam, with Schwaebe's 9.775, Doherty's 9.800 and Naito's 9.875 -- which ranks tied for second in school history -- finishing the event.
Melissa Stanton and Kristen Strid shared the uneven bars title at 9.600 while SPU teammate Corrie McDaniel won the floor exercise with a 9.800 effort. McDaniel was second in the all-around at 37.425 while fellow Falcon Cindy Reed placed third at 36.375.
