Gymnasts Place Third In Competitive Home Quad Meet

DAVIS, Calif. - Juniors Michelle Ho and Katie Yamamura tied for second place on floor exercise with 9.775 scores, highlighting UC Davis in a women's collegiate gymnastics quadrangular at the Pavilion Friday night. The Aggies scored 191.600 to finish third among the four-team field. San Jose State scored 194.125 to upset 17th-ranked Arizona, which compiled a 194.100. Alaska Anchorage placed fourth with a 187.475.

UC Davis moves to 4-11 for the year.

Yamamura and Ho hit their two scores down the final stretch of the fourth rotation, helping the Aggies post a 48.375 in the event. Yamamura also placed second on vault with a 9.775.

UC Davis opened with a solid 48.125 on vault but counted two falls on uneven bars to finish at 47.125 in the second rotation. The team also counted a miss on balance beam, scoring a 47.975 in the event and holdnig a 143.225 through three rotations before the floor squad pushed the team past the 191-point barrier.

Sophomore Anna Shumaker enjoyed a strong two-event performance for the Aggies, hitting 9.700 on vault then a team-best 9.750 on beam. Madeline Kennedy competed in three lineups, scoring a 9.625 on vault, 9.675 on beam and a 9.600 on floor.

San Jose State senior Thomasina Wallace won the individual all-around with a 39.300, well ahead of Arizona's Aubree Cristello at 39.025. Wallace also took down meet wins on bars (9.900) and floor (9.825) while her teammate Casey McCord edged Yamamura for the vault title with a 9.800. Arizona's Katie Matusik claimed the meet beam title with a 9.900.

The highest Seawolf finisher was sophomore Emily Petersen, who tied for fifth place on bars at 9.750.

Friday's meet served as Senior Night for UC Davis, which has only the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship meet on its Pavilion slate. The Aggies paid tribute to team captains Lauren Eller and Erika Van Dyke, as well as former gymnasts Betsy Lim and Jennifer Mueller, who will graduate this spring. Van Dyke posted a 9.575 on bars in her final regular-season home meet.



UC Davis returns to action for a road quad meet at Sacramento State, joining Central Michigan and Seattle Pacific. Note: this meet is at 2 p.m., not 7 p.m. as has appeared on previous versions of the schedule.
