DAVIS, Calif. -
Freshman Katie Yamamura scored career-high marks toward event wins in both the vault and floor exercise, while assembling a winning 39.100 in the all-around, to lift UC Davis to a first-place team total of 194.600 in a women's collegiate gymnastics home triangular meet at the Pavilion Sunday. Texas Woman's University finished second with a 192.825 score, while California was third at 190.650.
The Aggies improve to 13-3 for the season. Their team total ranks second in school history, just one-tenth shy of 194.700 set in the 2008 MPSF Championships.
Yamamura scored a 9.850 on vault in UC Davis' opening rotation, good for the outright victory in the event. She also closed the meet with a 9.850 on floor exercise to finish in a three-way tie for first place, along with teammate Erika Van Dyke and Cal's Avery Gee. Van Dyke's mark on floor matched her career high. In between, Yamamura posted a 9.650 on bars and a 9.750 on beam en route to her 39.100 all-around total. She becomes the fifth Aggie in school history to break the 39-point barrier, with only Flora Bare (39.200 in 2003) and Lynn Schwaebe (39.175 in 2003) having scored higher.
UC Davis owned at least a share of first place on all four events. Senior Lida Gehlen tied TWU's Rashonda Cannie at 9.725 on uneven bars. Van Dyke hit 9.850 on balance beam, beating out Tanya Ho's 9.800 and a three-person chop for third at 9.775.
For her part, Ho finished in a tie for third place in the all-around at 38.775, matching Pioneer freshman Brittany Johnson. Cannie was second in the all-around at 38.900.
In all, four Aggies set or tied career bests on floor. Besides Yamamura and Van Dyke at the top of the standings, senior Kendall McCann carded a 9.825 for fourth place and sophomore Jennifer Mueller posted a sixth-place 9.775. As a team, UC Davis went 49.000 in the event, breaking that barrier for the first time since 2004.
UC Davis breaks for final examinations before hosting its home finale against Stanford on March 21.
