SAN JOSE, Calif. -
Sophomore Anna Shumaker scored a career high on balance beam to finish in a tie for second place while freshman Tiana Montell compiled a personal-best 38.625 in the all-around, highlighting UC Davis' season-high 194.150 team score in a women's collegiate gymnastics triangular at Spartan Gym Friday evening.
Both host San Jose State and visiting Sacramento State also hit season-best scores. The Spartans won the team competition with a 195.850 while the Hornets finished second with a 195.275.
Shumaker delivered a 9.850 in the meet's final rotation, easily surpassing her previous best of 9.775 and finishing in a three-way chop with SJSU's Cassandra Harrison and Sacramento State's Kailey Hansen. Junior Michelle Ho crushed her previous beam best with a 9.800 score while Leah Housman added 9.775, helping the Aggies close out with a 48.775 team total on the apparatus - second in school history.
Montell also scored a PR on beam with a 9.725. She posted a 9.625 on vault, 9.675 on uneven bars and 9.600 on floor exercise to assemble a four-event sum of 38.625, more than a full tenth ahead of the 38.450 she scored at Sacramento State six days earlier.
Ho helped UC Davis open the meet with a 48.725 on floor, scoring a fourth-place 9.825 in the anchor spot of the lineup. Junior Katie Yamamura hit a 9.775 and sophomore Madeline Kennedy scored 9.725 to bolster the team mark. The Aggies then recorded a 48.200 on vault, helped by Shumaker's 9.725 and Yamamura's 9.775 down the stretch.
Freshman
Kayla DeFrancesco led UC Davis in uneven bars with a 9.825 to help that lineup post yet another season high, a 48.450 in the third rotation. Ho scored 9.725 in the No. 2 spot of the order while Yamamura closed out the round with a 9.775 effort. The Aggies' previous 2012 best on bars was a 48.350 in the season opener at Arizona State.
Spartan senior Thomasina Wallace captured three event wins plus the all-around, totaling a 39.550. Hornet freshman Kalliah McCartney won the vault at 9.875 and finished second in the all-around with a school-record 39.375.
Friday's meet is the regular-season finale for UC Davis, which returns home to host the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Saturday, March 24.
