DAVIS, Calif. -
Freshman Katie Yamamura scored a second-place 39.075 in the individual all-around to help UC Davis to a 194.575 team score in a non-conference collegiate women's gymnastics dual meet against Stanford on Sunday afternoon. The visiting Cardinal won the meet with a 196.600.
The Aggies finish the season with a 13-4 dual record. The Cardinal, ranked No. 8 nationally, improves to 14-2.
Yamamura stuck a 9.825 on vault and floor while tying her career best of 9.775 on beam en route to her second consecutive 39-point all-around total. She finished behind Stanford's Carly Janiga, who assembled a four-event score of 39.575. Janiga is the defending Pacific-10 Conference champion in the all-around.
Yamamura and senior Christine Tao posted the highest UC Davis event finishes, tying for third place on balance beam with matching 9.775 scores. Yamamura was the top Aggie on vault, just ahead of senior Tanya Ho's 9.750. Senior Lida Gehlen led UC Davis on bars with a 9.775, while Yamamura's 9.825 on floor was tied for fifth.
Stanford won all four events, plus the all-around. Janiga captured the vault at 9.950, while helping offset a Cardinal miss with a winning 9.925 on beam. Sophomore and Canadian national team member Alyssa Brown claimed the meet title on bars at 9.900. Freshman Ashley Morgan took down the floor exercise win with a 9.900 score. In local interest, Davis Senior High product Tenaya West took part in a three-way tie for second place on floor at 9.850.
Ho and senior Kendall McCann both posted all-around scores toward their respective RQS standings. Ho compiled a 38.500 for the meet, while McCann's 9.775 on floor pushed her to a 38.525 score.
The Aggies' team score barely misses the season high of 194.600, set one week prior against California and Texas Woman's. UC Davis outscored its guest with a 48.550 on balance beam and matched its 2010 best of 48.650 on vault.
As a home finale, Sunday's meet also served as Senior Day for the UC Davis team. In addition to honoring Ho, McCann, Gehlen, Tao and Michelle Bobonski (who added a 9.700 on vault), the Aggies paid tribute to Eve Hui, the team's student assistant and meet director this season; and Katie Reinhardt, the 2006 USAG All-American whose career was cut short by injuries.
UC Davis competes next at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, hosted by Seattle Pacific on Saturday. The Aggies look to wipe out an early 191.575 road score to give their RQS a final boost, bringing them closer to the national top 36 and a potential berth in the NCAA postseason.
