CORVALLIS, Ore. - Senior Katie Yamamura scored a 9.825 on vault while junior Anna Shumaker finished close behind with a 9.800 in that event, highlighting UC Davis action at the NCAA Corvallis Region women's gymnastics championship hosted by Oregon State at Gill Coliseum Saturday evening.
Shumaker also scored a 9.800 on beam en route to a 38.825 all-around total. Yamamura compiled a 38.450 in the all-around while senior floor specialist Michelle Ho went 9.750 in her lone event. This was the third NCAA regional appearance for Yamamura, the second for Shumaker and the first for Ho.
Shumaker's beam score tied her with eight other competitors for 17th place in the meet, the highest of the three Aggies on any apparatus. She placed 12th of 17 in the all-around race, five spots ahead of Yamamura. Shumaker rounded out her day with a 9.625 on floor and a 9.600 on uneven bars.
Yamamura also opened on uneven bars with a 9.650. She stumbled to a 9.200 on beam due to a fall, rebounded to a 9.775 on floor then nailed her vault score, good of a seven-way tie for 18th place. Ho's floor score tied her for 27th for the meet.
Georgia won the regional with a 197.425 effort while Arkansas nabbed the second team advancement with a 196.950. The remaining four teams finished within six-tenths of each other: Arizona State finished third at 195.700, host Oregon State was fourth with a 195.375, Boise State placed fifth at 195.350 while California took sixth with a 195.125 total.
The Razorbacks' Katherine Grable was the meet's biggest winner, claiming the all-around title with a 39.650, winning the vault outright at 9.950 and taking part in a three-way chop for the floor championship with a 9.950. Georgia's Shayla Worley won the beam with a 9.925 and tied with Grable for the floor win. Fellow Bulldog Chelsea Davis claimed the bars title with her 9.900 effort.
Saturday's regional concludes a successful season for the UC Davis women's gymnastics program. The Aggies ranked 42nd nationally with a regional-qualyfing score of 194.780 -- higher than the school record entering the season. They also scored six of the highest scores in school history, including the top three marks of 195.625, 195.475 and 194.950 down the stretch.
