LAST WEEK
Friday, Feb. 22 - at Sacramento State (2nd, 192.825)

NOTES
TO RECAP: After breaking the 194-point barrier in three straight meets, UC Davis (8-8) slipped to a 192.825 in a road dual at Sacramento State Friday night... The Aggies committed nine total falls, counting two on beam, to finish with their lowest score since January 11... Nonetheless, highlighting the meet were strong individual performances plus a season-high 48.800 by the vault squad... Junior Anna Shumaker tied her career best of 9.850 on vault to win that event title... Freshman Stephanie Stamates scored a 9.825 on floor to tie for an event win... Other Aggies to set or tie personal bests: Tiana Montell on vault (9.800), Jamie Yamashita on vault (9.625), Dani Judal on bars (9.750), Lisa Wiktorski on bars (9.800), Kala DeFrancesco on floor (9.775) and Shumaker on floor (9.800)... UC Davis scored 48.825 as a team on floor exercise in the third rotation, pulling to within three tenths of Sacramento State in the meet standings.

RANKINGS: The first rankings by regional qualifying score went up at Troester Consulting's site this week, with only William & Mary and Wilson College not having the minimum of six meets to qualify... UC Davis ranks 42nd nationally at 193.720, slightly ahead of San Jose State (193.610) and nearly a quarter-point behind Rutgers (193.950)... The top 36 teams qualify for NCAA Regionals; Pittsburgh sits on that cutoff with a 194.515 RQS... In the West, senior Michelle Ho ranks T13th on bars (9.800) and T12th on floor (9.810)... Shumaker's Friday performance put her at T11th on vault (9.815)... She qualified for the NCAA postseason as an individual at-large vaulter as a freshman in 2011.

UP NEXT: UC Davis ends a three-week road stretch with a home meet on Friday... As if by design, the March 1 meet is the first of two against San Jose State, so both teams will battle for every tenth in their respective pursuits of a Top 36 RQS... Tickets are available through tickets.ucdavis.edu... Live results, available at the link above, will go up once the meet starts.

HONORARY ASSISTANT COACHES: Head coach John Lavallee's tradition of the Special Facility Assistant Coach of the Day has continued into 2013, and two individuals will hold the title on Friday... One is sociology professor David Orzechowicz (pronounced "OR-uh-KOR-vits"), who earned his Ph.D at UC Davis in 2012... The other is new head football coach Ron Gould, who replaced the retiring Bob Biggs after the 2012 season.

SAN JOSE STATE (8-9) comes off a season-high 195.000, set in a rare Monday night meet at Cal on February 18; just three days after scoring a winning 194.550 in a home triangular with Utah State and Brown... The Spartans scored 48 or better on all four events for the first time this season, culminating in their 11th 195-point effort in program history... Cassandra Harrison scored 39.200 and 39.100 in the all-around in the two meets, respectively... The Spartans had scored in the mid-193s for the three previous meets before hitting back-to-back season bests over the holiday weekend.

HEAD COACH JOHN LAVALLEE:
"I really think Friday night was an anomaly. We had been competing extremely well and we had a great week of practice. Every once in a while, you have a hiccup. It was nothing more than that. We've got four meets left and we're very focused on those. We have great competition left: San Jose home and away, then Sac State at home. Then we have our conference meet. If anything, it was a cold slap in the face and a wake-up call for us to redouble our efforts and make sure we are on top of things."
