DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore Michelle Bobonski was selected as Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week for the period ending March 2, it was announced by the league office Tuesday. She is the fifth Aggie to win such honors in 2008, and the fourth in a row since February 11.
A native of Redondo Beach, Calif. and an alumna of American Gymnastics Academy (Long Beach), Bobonski enjoyed a strong three-event performance in Friday's home dual with Alaska Anchorage. She captured the individual vault at 9.800, placed second on uneven bars at 9.725, and matched her career high of 9.725 on balance beam, good for a tie for third. Bobonski's performance helped UC Davis compile a season-best 192.875 in the meet.
This is the sixth MPSF Gymnast of the Week award for UC Davis. Previous 2008 winners include Tanya Ho (Jan. 14, Feb. 18), Lida Gehlen (Jan. 28), Michelle Kulovitz (Feb. 11) and Stacey Nicolini (Feb. 25). Gehlen and Kulovitz were also potential candidates for the March 2 honor: Gehlen captured the uneven bars with a 9.850 while Kulovitz scored a career-best 9.875 to win on floor exercise.
UC Davis returns to action on Friday for a quadrangular meet at Sacramento State with California and Seattle Pacific.
