DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis senior Anna Shumaker captured Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week honors for the second time in 2014 and the third time in her career, it was announced by the conference office Tuesday evening.
A team co-captain from Alameda, Calif. and an alumna of Pacific West Gymnastics, Shumaker set career highs on floor exercise and in the all-around during Friday's record-setting dual meet with Seattle Pacific. She scored a 9.925 on floor to edge teammates Stephanie Stamates and Kala DeFrancesco for the meet win, and captured the all-around title with a 39.275 total. Shumaker's floor score, highest by any MPSF gymnast in any event this year, puts her in a tie for fourth all-time at UC Davis. The all-around score moves her into third in program history behind former teammate Katie Yamamura, who twice scored 39.325.
Shumaker's floor performance helped the Aggies compile a 49.425, tying another school record and representing the No. 2 floor total in conference history. Her 9.800 on bars contributed toward a 49.225, setting another UC Davis benchmark. Most importantly, Shumaker's overall performances led the Aggies to a team total of 196.425, a school and MPSF record.
Shumaker beat out Air Force's Jessica Wallander and San Jose State's Cassandra Harrison for the Gymnast of the Week honors. Seattle Pacific's Tracie Villanueva won Newcomer of the Week while SJSU senior Julia Greer garnered Specialist of the Week accolades. This is the first year the conference has issued three separate weekly awards.
She previously won this award on January 28, and shared it back on February 5, 2013.
The 30th-ranked Aggies return to action in a Friday triangular at Sacramento State, joining another MPSF member, Alaska Anchorage. Meet time at The Nest is 7 p.m.
