NOTES
TO RECAP: UC Davis went 48.525 on vault and a season-high 48.725 on uneven bars to finish strong at Cal's Sunday quadrangular at Haas Pavilion... Leading the way were a pair of Michelles... Senior Michelle Kulovitz scored a season-best 38.700 in the all-around, good for fourth in the meet... She tied for third place on vault with a 9.800, not long after scoring the same on floor exercise... Sophomore Michelle Bobonski enjoyed a strong three-event performance, going 9.675 on beam, 9.750 on vault and a career-high 9.800 on bars... The team's 48.725 on bars, T6th in the school record book, was also helped by a 9.800 from Tanya Ho and fourth-place 9.825 by Lida Gehlen... Sophomore Kendall McCann chipped in a 9.700 on bars to match her career best... She previously scored a 9.700 at Alaska Anchorage on Jan. 27... Junior Adee Schoffman scored a 9.750 on floor to help the Aggies offset four misses... Kulovitz finished with her 9.800 but UC Davis went 46.900 in the event, its lowest in a month.
IN THE RANKINGS: UC Davis leads the MPSF and ranks 54th nationally with a 191.520 regional-qualifying score (RQS)... Gehlen continues to hold her position for an NCAA West Regional berth as a UB qualifier... Her 9.825 RQS is 13th in the West, with only gymnasts from UCLA, Boise State, Stanford and Oregon State ahead of her... Bobonski still stands as the alternate qualifier on vault, ranking 22nd with a 9.800 RQS... Cal State Fullerton's Maddie Steinauer is 11th at 9.835... If the Titans can move from No. 40 into the national top 36 (without moving San Jose State out), Bobonski becomes the leading individual qualifier... That is, unless another Aggie overtakes her: teammate Stacey Nicolini is close behind at T23rd (9.790)... Kulovitz ranks 25th regionally on floor at 9.755... To advance to the region meet, she would need Cal State Fullerton to make the top-36 cut without dislodging San Jose State (34th) and Sacramento State (36th) in the process.
In the conference, the Aggies claim the top three slots and five of the top six on vault... Bobonski, Nicolini and Kulovitz respectively hold the top three at 9.800, 9.790 and 9.755... Marcy Miller is fifth with a 9.720 RQS, then Tanya Ho is right behind at 9.705... On bars, Gehlen and Ho occupy the MPSF's top two, averaging 9.825 and 9.735, respectively... Nicolini also shares to top slot on beam as her 9.625 RQS matches that of Air Force's Brittany Dutton... Kulovitz continues to chase Air Force's Abigail Rogers for the conference lead on floor exercise... UC Davis holds the team leads on vault (48.685) and bars (48.235), in addition to the overall team RQS.
COMPUTING THE RQS: The RQS is based on a team or individual's six best regular-season meet scores, of which a minimum three must be from road meets... The highest score is eliminated and remaining five scores are averaged... The RQS rankings, compiled weekly by Troester Consulting (www.troester.com/gym), are listed by conference, region and national.
UP NEXT: UC Davis takes a week off for final examinations then hosts a quadrangular with Stanford, Sacramento State and San Jose State on Sunday... The Aggies also host the MPSF Championships on March 28... Sunday's meet should be particularly competitive for the Hornets and Spartans, each of whom look to protect West Regional team berths.
STANFORD (10th nationally, 196.360) won a tough home triangular meet against Alabama and Nebraska on March 7, scoring a 196.775... The Cardinal hit their season high of 197.375 in a televised home meet against archrival Cal on Feb. 24... 11-time All-American Tabitha Yim scored a 39.600 in the all-around in the `Bama/Nebraska triangular... SAC STATE (36th, 193.585) erased a 191.450 off the RQS calculation with a 193.850 at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational at Oregon State Saturday... Melissa Genovese ranks second in the West and No. 7 nationally on balance beam with a 9.885 RQS... She has earned Western Athletic Conference Specialist of the Week four times this season, including the last two... SAN JOSE STATE (34th, 194.050) scored a 194.825 in Sunday's quad meet at Cal, with junior Veronica Porte claiming the all-around with a 39.150... Porte also shared first place on vault at 9.825... The Hornets and Spartans will rematch six days after the Aggie quad meet at the WAC Championships.
