DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Katie Yamamura won her third Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week award of the season, and her 12th of her career, the conference office announced Tuesday evening. This also marks the fifth time the honor as gone to a UC Davis gymnast in 2013.
Yamamura highlighted the Aggies' record-breaking home finale by tying her own school benchmark of 39.325 in the all-around. She tied season highs of 9.875 on vault and 9.850 on floor, while adding a 9.825 on bars and 9.775 on balance beam. The four-event total represented the ninth time Yamamura hit the 39-point barrier in her career, another program best.
The Palo Alto, Calif. native helped UC Davis post a 195.625 overall, surpassing the previous record of 195.475 set against San Jose State two weeks prior. The Aggies' all-time high entering the 2013 season had been a 194.700 from the 2008 MPSF Championships.
Yamamura won similar honors on February 19 and March 5 of this year. Other Aggies to have claimed MPSF Gymnast of the Week awards in 2013 are Anna Shumaker (Feb. 5) and Michelle Ho (Jan. 8 and 15), each of whom would likely have been a strong candidate under any other circumstances. Ho scored 9.825 on bars, 9.725 on beam and 9.900 on floor in Friday's meet while Shumaker hit a career-high 9.825 on floor en route to her second straight 39-point all-around score.
UC Davis returns to action at the MPSF Championships on Saturday. The Aggies hope to capture their four consecutive team title.
