DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis women's gymnastics inked Phoebe Pummarachai to a National Letter of Intent during the spring signing period, head coach John Lavallee announced. She joins fall signees Alexis Brown and Miranda Holder to form a strong three-person NLI class for 2013-14.
Pummarachai, a senior at Ayala High School in Chino Hills, is expected to enroll at UC Davis in the fall of 2014.
Pummarachai previously competed for Gym-Max, where she was a teammate of current Aggie Katy Nogaki, before taking a brief hiatus from gymnastics in 2012. She returned to action as a member of Winners Gymnastics partway into the 2013 season, qualifying for the state, region and J.O meets. Pummarachai then repeated that triple in her first full season with Winners this spring. She captured SoCal titles on vault, beam and the all-around in March, then followed with a third-place all-around showing at the Region I meet earlier in April.
"Phoebe is strong and talented enough to compete every event for UC Davis," said Lavallee. "She has a proven track record, qualifying for the J.O. Nationals three times. She brings the ability to perform in big meets, and to perform well."
Pummarachai also excels in the classroom, holding a perfect 4.0 GPA while earning Principal Awards and CSF membership. She holds citizenship in Taiwan and Thailand as well as the U.S.
UC Davis women's gymnastics enjoyed perhaps its finest season in history, finishing a team-high 34th nationally in the regional qualifying scores rankings and earning the program's first team appearance at an NCAA region meet since 1998. The Aggies set or tied school records in all four events plus a 196.425 total score on February 28.
