DAVIS, Calif. - Juniors Christine Tao and Michelle Bobonski have been selected as team co-captains for the 2010 UC Davis women's gymnastics season, it was announced by head coach John Lavallee at the team's year-end banquet Sunday. Additionally, four student-athletes were granted "Major Contribution" awards to commemorate their seasons.
Tao, a design major from Maple Valley, Wash., captured a share of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title as a sophomore in 2008. Bobonski, a communication major from Redondo Beach, Calif., was the MPSF co-champion on vault that year, and has earned All-MPSF honors in the event for the past two seasons.
In lieu of the standard Most Valuable and Most Improved accolades, Lavallee opts to present Major Contribution Awards to his student-athletes for their various achievements. The 2009 winners are juniors Tanya Ho and Kendall McCann, and freshmen Jennifer Mueller and Erika Van Dyke.
Ho and McCann each claimed All-MPSF honors in two events plus the all-around during the season. Mueller hit 11-for-11 in her floor exercise routines for the season, while Van Dyke went 10-for-11 on floor and 7-for-8 on beam during the year.
UC Davis marked its 2009 season by improving on its previous team score nine straight weeks, eventually finishing third at the MPSF Championships at the end of March.
