DAVIS, Calif. - Helping to cap a tremendous 2011-12 athletics year, UC Davis Athletics saluted its five conference title teams on Wednesday night with the inaugural "Championship Dinner" at Seasons Restaurant in downtown Davis.

The event celebrated the accomplishments of the women's cross country, women's gymnastics, and women's track and field teams as well as the men's and women's golf teams which each captured league championships during their respective seasons. Additionally, several student-athletes and coaches received plaques from their conferences for postseason honors they received earlier.

Nona Richardson, interim director of athletics, acknowledged the hard work and dedication displayed by the teams and said she hopes that even more teams will be part of the "Championship Dinner" in years to come.

"We want to give our student-athletes the best experiences possible and recognizing their achievements is an important part of that," she said. "It's not easy being the best team in your conference and we honor the commitment it took to accomplish that."

Richardson also announced during the dinner that each member of the championship teams will receive commemorative rings. The NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Opportunity Fund is providing funding for the dinner and the rings.

Women's cross country and track and field captured their first-ever Big West Conference Championships while both the men's and women's golf teams defended championships from the league as well. The gymnastics squad repeated as Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champions.

UC Davis finished second in the Big West Conference Commissioner's Cup, its best finish ever.
