DAVIS, Calif. - A total of seven UC Davis student-athletes, plus the team as a whole, captured National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women Academic Awards, the organization announced on Saturday. Alphabetically, the Aggie honorees are Roxanna Agah, Shayla Barnett, Jordan Helgesen, Rachel Kreager, Katy Nogaki, Julia Samaniego and Aya Suzuki.
As a team, UC Davis combined for a 3.17 grade-point average as one of 70 teams nationwide to eclipse the 3.0 mark. To capture NACGC/W academic distinction, a student-athlete must have a year-long or cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
This is the third such award for Helgesen, Kreager and Nogaki. Helgesen, an animal science major who graduated in June, led the Aggies with a 3.85 GPA, while Nogaki was close behind with her 3.83 in human development. Agah and Suzuki are second-time honorees, while Barnett and Samaniego each picked up their first academic awards.
UC Davis ranked 42nd nationally with a 195.105 regional-qualifying score in 2017. The Aggies also finished second at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship, sent three qualifiers to the NCAA Seattle Regional, and compiled a 16-4 dual meet record.
