DAVIS, Calif. -
UC Davis women's gymnastics signed prospective student-athletes Rachel Kreager and Ioana "Yonni" Michovska to National Letters of Intent during the fall signing period, head coach John Lavallee announced in November. Both prospects compete for San Mateo Gymnastics, and are high school seniors who intend to enroll at the university in the fall of 2013.
"UC Davis gymnastics is very excited to welcome our newest team members," said Lavallee. "Both of these student-athletes bring proven success in both the classroom and the gym. They have both qualified to the Junior Olympic national championship and continue to improve. Rachel and Yonni both have high skill levels on each event and a proven record of performance in competition. We are eager to watch their progress and see what they can accomplish as Aggies."
Kreager, from Santa Rosa High School, has qualified for three Region 1 championships since moving up to Level 10 in 2010. In 2011, she placed fifth in the all-around (36.800) plus third on uneven bars (9.250) and fourth on balance beam (9.250) to advance to the J.O. nationals. The following year, Kreager placed sixth on beam (9.250) and 10th in the all-around (36.525), earning a berth at the National Invitational.
Michovska, of Napa High School, began competing at Level 10 for Redwood Empire Gymnastics before moving across the Bay to San Mateo. She won the individual bars at the 2011 NIT after placing seventh on bars (9.250) and fourth on beam (9.225) at that year's Region 1 Championships. In her first year at San Mateo, Michovska placed among the top six on vault, bars, beam and all-around at the regional, earning her a spot at the J.O. national championships.
UC Davis won its third consecutive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship last season, scoring a 193.675 during the championship meet. The Aggies begin their 2013 season at San Jose State on January 4.
