Emi Smith, an All-American goalie at Penn State, joined UC Davis women’s lacrosse as an assistant coach in September of 2016. She works primarily with the Aggie goalkeepers.

Smith started 73 games with the Nittany Lions in her four seasons, amassing 485 saves with 673 goals allowed for a .485 average and a 10.10 GAA. She enjoyed her most decorated season as a junior in 2015, garnering third-team IWLCA All-America, first-team All-Region and Big Ten Conference Goaltender of the Year accolades. That dream season also included three Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week nods, plus single-game performances of 11 and 14 saves in NCAA Tournament wins over Johns Hopkins and Virginia, respectively.

Smith, who earned her bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation and human services in 2016, added Academic Big Ten distinction. She made the Tewaaraton Award Watch List and the Preseason All-America rolls as a senior, eventually helping her team advance to the national semifinals.

Smith previously coached all aspects of the sport for Team 180 Sports-Lacrosse from 2013-16, and served as goalie coach for the Penn State women’s lacrosse summer clinic in 2015. UC Davis will mark her first foray into collegiate coaching. Smith originally hails from Denver, Colorado, where she starred for Regis Jesuit High School and Team 180. In fact, both Smith and Johnson are products of the Centennial State: Johnson grew up in the Denver suburb of Arvada before playing her collegiate lacrosse at Mount Saint Mary’s.
