Midweek contest features sibling rivalry... among coaching staffs

Kate Henwood, formerly the top assistant at Villanova and most recently the head coach at Garnet Valley High School in Glen Mills, Pa., became the third head coach for UC Davis women's lacrosse in the program's varsity era. She assumed the helm in July of 2012.

Henwood made her mark on the program in her first year, guiding the Aggies to the No. 5 offense in the nation. In the 2013 season finale, UC Davis enjoyed its biggest upset in program history with a 15-14 upset of 14th-ranked Stanford.

After three years as an assistant at Villanova, Henwood returned to her high school alma mater, immediately transforming a 9-10 Jaguar program into a national power. GVHS finished 11-8 in her first season, then posted back-to-back 24-3 marks in 2011 and 2012. In her penultimate season, the Jaguars ranked 13th nationally in ESPN's Fab 50 and 17th in MaxPreps' Xcellent 25 polls.

Then in 2012, GVHS captured its second consecutive Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association championship. The Jaguars won the school's first the year before despite a roster with just one senior player. Three of her standouts - Halley Barnes, Allyson Heavens and AnnaElise Morello - each captured US Lacrosse All-America nods last spring. For her part, Henwood earned Coach of the Year

Prior to her arrival at Garnet Valley, Henwood served as Villanova's top assistant coach and defensive coordinator under then head coach Jebb Chagan from 2006-09. During her three seasons, the Wildcats posted 19 wins after having combined for just nine in the previous four years. She also ran Nova's summer lacrosse camps, served on Princeton's camp and coached at Ultimate Goal Lacrosse Club during that time.

Henwood started all four years at LaSalle, serving as team captain in 2004 and 2005. She was selected as the Explorers' team MVP as a sophomore, earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 Conference honors as a junior, then claimed an Academic All-Atlantic 10 nod as a senior. She finished her career ranked second in school history in goals (122), assists (31), points (154) and ground balls (124). Henwood also set a La Salle career record of 122 draw controls, having led her team in that category as a junior.

Henwood earned her bachelor's degree in social studies and secondary education from La Salle in 2005, then added a master's degree in American history from Villanova in 2010. She continues to work on a second master's degree in educational leadership from St. Joseph's.
