Ducks turn back Aggie laxers, 15-5

EUGENE, Ore. - Five different Aggies players managed one goal each as UC Davis dropped a 15-5 decision to Oregon in non-conference women’s lacrosse action at Pape Field Friday evening.

The Aggies move to 0-2 for the season. The Ducks, formerly of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation but now competing in the Pacific-12 Conference, open at 1-0.

Junior Shannon Cross, senior Kate Fellner, senior Kelsey DeJesus, sophomore Sorana Larson and junior Taylor Cuenin each netted one goal for UC Davis, while sophomore Kate Graham had her team’s lone assist. DeJesus and sophomore defender Anna Belenis each caused a turnover, while DeJesus, Graham and senior Shannon Geary shared the Aggie lead of two draw controls.

For UO, veterans Shannon Williams and Jill Zubillaga each netted four goals while new goalkeeper Brittany Read tallied 11 saves against five goals allowed. Read earned ACC Defender of the Year for Louisville before transferring to Oregon for her senior season.

The Ducks led from wire to wire, although Fellner’s goal in the 11th minute did bring the margin to 3-2. However, Zubillaga scored three times in a 6-0 run to finish the half, setting the board at 9-2 at the break. Oregon had another unanswered run in the second half, turning a 9-3 margin into a 14-3 edge. 

UC Davis did manage to lower its turnovers from its season opener from 22 to 15, and cleared successfully in 19 of 22 transition opportunities. Oregon outshot its guests by a 28-23 margin, and won 12 of the 21 draws. 

The Aggies return home to host Division III power Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday. Game time is 1 p.m. at Aggie Stadium.
