FAIRFAX, Va. -
Junior attacker Meghan Jordan assisted on five goals while senior Carly Voris and freshman Melissa Kellan each tallied hat tricks, helping UC Davis score a 9-8 victory over George Mason in season-opening women's collegiate lacrosse action Friday afternoon.
The Aggies open the 2014 season at 1-0. The Patriots, who had their Wednesday contest with Longwood postponed by weather, kick of the year at 0-1.
Jordan chipped in a goal to go with her game-high assists total, second in her career only to the six she notched against San Diego State in April last season. Voris enjoyed an all-around complete game, shooting 3-for-5 with four draw controls, three ground balls and a late caused turnover that held off Mason's last-minute comeback efforts. Kellan notched three goals and two assists in her collegiate debut.
Junior Kai Murphy recorded 12 saves with eight goals against, with one of those opposing eight coming on a rare own-goal situation. Her play in the crease proved particularly important given how many more opportunities Mason had throughout the game: the host team had nearly twice as many shots as the Aggies (31-16) and won the majority of draws (12-7).
For the Patriots, senior midfielder Rachel Obregon led offensively with three goals on 10 shots. She also had three draw controls and a pair of steals.
UC Davis jumped out to a 3-1 lead, all on goals involving either Voris or Jordan, before Mason battled back to a 3-3 tie on Kristin Russell's second-chance score in the 15th minute. Voris completed her hat trick in the 23rd minute, but the Aggies allowed the Patriots to equalize by inadvertently scoring in their own goal.
Mason soon after fired a pair of shots during the 29th minute in an attempt to take its first lead but Murphy was there for the save on each. After a yellow card forced the Pats to play short-handed, sophomore Courtney Neff
put the Aggies up by a 5-4 lead, converting an assist from Kellan with just 1:12 before the break.
The Patriots finally pulled ahead midway through the second half, as Obregon broke the game's 11-minute scoreless stretch in the 44th. UC Davis responded with four unanswered - including three by Kellan - in restoring the Aggie lead to 9-6 with seven minutes remaining.
Undeterred, Obregon and Caitlin McGinn scored two goals within less than a minute of each other to cut the gap to just 9-8 with 2:27 remaining. Both teams went into a furious transition mode as Mason attempted to force an overtime and UC Davis looked to protect it lead. Voris, junior Allie Lehner and junior Morgan Sissler each posted steals down the final two minutes, each time preventing the Patriots from clearing to its attacking third.
UC Davis continues its Virginia road trip with a Sunday contest at Old Dominion. First draw is 10 a.m. Pacific.
