NORFOLK, Va. - Freshman attacker Melissa Kellan netted seven goals, junior midfielder Elizabeth Landry tallied six assists, and junior goalkeeper Kai Murphy posted 19 saves in leading UC Davis to a 12-6 win over Old Dominion in women's collegiate lacrosse action at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies open the year at 2-0. The Monarchs fall to 0-2.
All three of the top UC Davis performances entered the program's record book. Kellan's seven goals, the most by a freshman since Katie McMahon scored a school-record nine against Colorado College in 2004, is tied for seventh on the all-time Aggie single-game leaderboard. Landry's assists total joins a five-way tie for second in school history. Murphy's saves is tied for third, and the most since Hilary Harkins nabbed 19 in two different games in 2007.
Senior midfielder Carly Voris added a hat trick while Landry and sophomore Ellie Delich each scored one goal. Sophomore Mary Doyle chipped in two assists, with Delich and junior Meghan Jordan adding one apiece.
For ODU, freshman Megan Cameron scored two goals, junior Jessica Liberty had three assists, and goalkeepers Karen Hayde and Maggi Buckley combined for 15 saves.
UC Davis never trailed in the contest although the two teams played even 3-3 ball through the first 24 minutes of play. Landry assisted on three unanswered goals to close out the half -- two to Voris and one to Kellan -- to give the Aggies a 6-3 lead at halftime.
Jordan assisted Kellan on the first goal of the second half, and Delich scored on an eight-meter chance in the 37th minute, but the Monarchs matched goal-for-goal to stay within three. Then Kellan scored three goals within a 4-0 run down the stretch, expanding the Aggie lead to 12-5 with six minutes remaining.
Old Dominion outshot UC Davis by a 30-29 margin, and committed only half the number of turnovers (11 to 21), but the Aggies dominated the center draw throughout the game. They won 18 of the 20, with Voris leading the way with six. Landry added five draw controls, Doyle won four and Delich earned another three. Doyle has posted three caused turnovers to lead UC Davis defensively.
The Aggies return to action on Saturday, March 8 in their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener against Cal. That date kicks off a three-game homestand that includes Siena (Mar. 10) and Robert Morris (Mar. 12).
