Kelly Albin posted three goals and two assists while
Naomi Coffman and Leslie Kado each had two scores as part of a 6-0 first-half
run to lead UC Davis to a 12-6 win against Saint Mary's in a Mountain Pacific
Lacrosse League match at Saint Mary's Stadium Tuesday.
The Aggies earn their first win of the season, bringing their season
and MPLL record to 1-1. The Gaels drop to 1-1 overall and in league.
SMC drew first blood in the third minute of play when Molly Wagner recovered
Stephanie French's missed free-position attempt, then set up Alison High
for a goal. However, UC Davis responded on the subsequent draw as Naomi
Coffman scored on a feed from Jaime Fitzpatrick from behind the cage. That
score kicked off a 6-0 Aggie run that included an additional goal by Coffman,
two by Kado and one by Kate Hanson.
"We worked really hard this week and were well-prepared for this
game," said UC Davis head coach Elaine Jones. "All of the attacks
worked on looking to score and taking a lot of shots. People who need to
step up, stepped up."
Hanson had two assists in that first-half stretch, including Stacy Sugarman's
score at 28:02 that ended the tear. The senior attack pressured Gael goalie
Megan Ceccotti into a turnover behind the cage. Hanson then passed to Sugarman
who converted the opportunity.
Saint Mary's first home Thera Luce scored an unassisted goal with less
than 20 second in the first half to cut the Aggie lead to 6-2 at the halftime
break, and Lauren Riggers added a score early in the second period to bring
the score to 6-3. However, UC Davis put the game out of reach by piling
up six of the next seven goals -- three of which came from senior All-American
Albin -- to build a 12-4 lead entering the final minute.
The Gaels managed a free-position goal by Luce and a put-back by Wagner
to trim the final margin to six.
"The defense did a great job with just a little letdown at the end,"
said Jones. "We knew they could run through the midfield. We just had
to hold them [there]. We had very good helping defense -- they had to work
very hard for their goals."
Aggie goalkeeper Kristen Braasch also came up with clutch saves throughout
the game, stopping 12 shots on goal including five free-position attempts
Fitzpatrick finished the game with a goal and two assists. Sophomore
Liz Collett, who played for her hometown crowd, had a goal and assist.
Luce led SMC with two goals while Wagner posted a 1-1-2 line.
UC Davis continues MPLL action with a game against Denver Friday.
