Final Stats

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Junior Anna Geissbuhler scored four goals while Elizabeth Datino added three goals and two assists but UC Davis was unable to protect an early 8-6 lead, falling by an 18-14 final to Virginia Tech in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Thompson Field Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies fall to 2-3 for the year. The Hokies improve to 3-2. This is the first time UC Davis women's lacrosse has ever played a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Besides Geissbuhler and Datino, freshman Elizabeth Landry posted a hat trick on five shots. Lauren Nardi, Allie Lehner, Charlotte Morris and Alex Reidy each had one goal while junior Stephanie Guercio picked up a team-best five draw controls.

Senior Morgan Widlake and freshman Meg Bartley each scored four goals for Tech. Brooke Martin added three goals and an assist while midfielder Jessica Nonn won five draw controls.

Although Datino scored the game's first goal just 88 seconds in, the Hokies responded with three straight to claim a 3-1 lead by the fourth minute. Datino had two goals and an assist during a 5-1 UC Davis run through the 24th minute, taking a 6-4 lead. But Tech answered with three goals in less than a minute to take the lead for good. A Landry goal cut into the Hokie lead to make it 8-7 at the halftime break.

Four different Tech players netted goals in the first 10 minutes after the intermission, boosting the Hokie advantage to 12-7. UC Davis never approached by closer than four as the two teams battled to relatively even scoring down the final stretch.

Tech outshot its guest by a 29-23 margin and won 19 of the game's 30 draws. UC Davis also struggled from eight meters, shooting just 1 of 4 on free-position attempts. The Hokies hit 5 of 8 on such situations.

After five straight road games, the Aggies host their home opener on March 11 against Long Island. Game time is 1 p.m. at Aggie Stadium.
