DAVIS, Calif. - Senior goalkeeper Lauren Ali recorded 10 saves and four ground balls while freshman midfielder Kate Graham scored three goals with two assists but UC Davis was unable to protect a 7-6 lead, eventually falling by an 11-7 final to Coastal Carolina in collegiate women’s lacrosse action at Aggie Stadium Monday.

The Aggies fall to 2-4 for the year. The Chanticleers remain unbeaten at 2-0.

In addition to Graham’s output, sophomore Shannon Cross and junior Kelsey DeJesus added two goals each. Sophomore Taylor Cuenin added an assist to go with team bests of four draw controls, three caused turnovers and four ground balls. Sophomore defender Natalie Garces also had a pair of steals.

For CCU, sophomore Haley Alexander netted four goals and five draw controls while sophomore Haley Kyger added a hat trick with five CTs. Senior midfielder Maggie Carr contributed four assists, including three in the Chants’ 5-0 finish to the game.

The two teams traded goals for the first 12 minutes of play before Coastal scored back-to-back to craft a 4-2 lead. Graham scored on a drive in 21st minute to cut the margin back to one, but Sophia Crowther converted an eight-meter chance with 4:19 left, giving the Chants a 5-3 halftime edge.

DeJesus scored both of her goals in a 4-1 outburst in the first five minutes of the second half, helping the Aggies forge a 7-6 lead. Cross started that outburst when she fired a quick-stick goal on a Graham pass as the play clock wound down in the 32nd minute. Cuenin scored the go-ahead in the 35th after Aggie defender Tess Kevorkian scooped up an errant pass in her defensive third.

The Aggies and Chanticleers locked up in a defensive standoff for the next 12 minutes, with Ali notching three saves to keep CCU off the board. Coastal eventually equalized in the 48th when Alexander took a pass from Carr, spun to her left and fired in her third goal of the contest. That ignited a strong finish for the Chants, which scored four more unanswered down the stretch. Meanwhile, the Aggies committed six turnovers in the final 12 minutes of play, including a crease violation that erased what appeared to be a Cuenin goal in the 52nd.

Despite winning the battle for draws (12-8), UC Davis struggled to 24 turnovers to CCU’s 14 and was outshot by a 26-15 margin.

The Aggies continue their four-game homestand with a Sunday visit from Quinnipiac. First draw is 1 p.m.
