Senior Jaime Fitzpatrick posted a season-high five
goals while juniors Leslie Kado and Naomi Coffman each added a hat trick
to lead UC Davis to a 15-6 win over Stonehill College in a NCAA Division
II women's lacrosse match at Aggie Field Friday.
The Aggies, ranked fifth nationally in the coaches' poll of March 10,
improves to 4-3 on the season. The Chieftains, ranked fourth, drops to 0-2.
"We did everything we needed to do, which was to score early and
often and get the confidence going," said UC Davis head coach Elaine
Jones. "They were fired up. Everybody brought their 'A' game and took
it to Stonehill."
True to Jones' gameplan, the Aggies jumped out to a 3-1 lead within the
first 5:03 of the game. Naomi Coffman converted an assist from Stacy Sugarman
at the 1:17 mark for the initial score, then Leslie Kado added an unassisted
goal just 45 seconds later to put her team up 2-0.
Stonehill's Collette Carpenter put her team on the board with an solo
shot at 4:46, but Sugarman won the subsequent draw and set up Fitzpatrick
for a score just 17 seconds later. That goal launched a scoreless span of
more than 16 minutes that saw only four shots from each team. Sugarman broke
that stretch with back-to-back goals at 21:07 and 23:44, helping UC Davis
build a 6-2 lead at halftime.
"We exploded in the second half. We didn't want a mental let-down,"
said Jones. "That was a big thing for us. We didn't want to let Stonehill
back into it."
Fitzpatrick punched in a free-position shot just 1:07 into the second
period, then assisted on two goal to Coffman and one to Kado in the next
four minutes of play. In all, UC Davis enjoyed an 8-1 run over 16 minutes
during the second half to extend its lead to 14-3. Carpenter had the lone
Chieftain goal in that span, finishing a free-position opportunity at 34:52.
Stonehill's Katie Lambert also interrupted the Aggies' run at 47:28 with
her unassisted goal, but Aggie sophomore Liz Collett countered with Kate
Hanson-assisted goal 61 seconds later to give UC Davis a 15-4 lead, its
largest of the game.
Fitzpatrick led UC Davis with three assists while Kado and Sugarman had
two each. Carpenter led the Chieftains her with two goals while Colby Confer
posted a 1-1-2 scoring line.
Aggie goalie Kristen Braasch recorded six saves on 18 total shots. Her
counterpart, Carissa Medeiros, blocked nine of UC Davis' 36 shots for the
game.
UC Davis breaks for final examinations before taking on four road games
starting March 26.
