DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore Katie McMahon finished two goals overall and freshman Kaitlin Moore scored two goals as part of a 5-1 opening run as UC Davis beat Long Island, 7-5, in a collegiate women's lacrosse game at Aggie Field Wednesday.
The Aggies even their overall record to 3-3. The Blackbirds, members of the Northeast Conference, drop to 1-3 on the year.
UC Davis took 20 of its 28 shots before the halftime break, but only managed a 5-3 lead in the first period. McMahon assisted Moore on a goal in the opening minute, then freshman Alannah Taylor set up junior Tiffany Lee less than two minutes later to put the Aggies out to a 2-0 start.
LIU sophomore Amy Rizzo scored the first of her four goals after teammate Kelly Betancur recovered a missed Blackbird shot off the post, halving the margin to one goal at the 7:51 mark. UC Davis then scored the next three goals, getting an unassisted score by McMahon, a Megan Miller-assisted goal by Moore, then another unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Jen Sanderson.
Armed with a 5-1 lead, the Aggies failed to score for the remainder of the half. Rizzo and Chrissie Carleton each scored to close the first half.
Helped by Carleton's steal behind the UC Davis restraining line, Rizzo completed her hat trick at the 33:23 mark to cut the lead to 5-4. However a save by Aggie goalie Kristen Braasch helped Kaitlin Moore connect with Katie McMahon for a score three minutes later, pushing the hosts ahead by two.
Aggie defender Tarryn Furr caused a Blackbird turnover that eventually led to a free-position opportunity for UC Davis with 14:00 remaining. Katie McGovern converted the eight-meter shot to extend her team's lead to 7-4. Carleton and Rizzo connected on another goal at 49:25 to bring the score to its final tally.
Freshman Hilary Harkins started the game in net for UC Davis, allowing three goals with one save. Braasch relieved her in the second half and posted five saves against just two goals against in eight shots. Blackbird goalie Patricia Parker recorded 10 saves in the opposite cage.
The Aggies break for final examinations before returning to action against Marist on March 24.
