W. LONG BRANCH, N.J. -
Sophomore Katie Degen and junior Jeanette Stott each scored four goals to help Monmouth ride a 7-1 start to a 13-5 victory over UC Davis in a non-conference women's collegiate lacrosse game Sunday.
The Aggies drop to 5-4 for the year. The Hawks even their record to 3-3.
Sophomore attacker Katie McMahon led the Aggies with two goals while Megan O'Connor, Katie McGovern and Alannah Taylor each scored one. Goalkeeper Kristen Braasch posted 13 goals in net.
Monmouth wasted no time in constructing its early lead, getting two goals from Degen in the openings minutes of play. Alexis Hiering assisted Degen just 41 seconds into the game, then Degen scored an unassisted goal at 2:47. Megan Nutter scored the first of her two goals in the 10th minute to send her team to a 3-0 margin.
O'Connor posted the first tally to the UC Davis scoring column in the 11th minute, but Monmouth extended the lead to 7-1 during the next 11 minutes. Nutter and Kaitlyln Robinson scored back-to-back goals within a 27-second span in the 14th minute, then Stott recorded consecutive scores in the 22nd as part of that run.
Taylor and McMahon each scored on free-position chances to finish the first half, cutting the margin to 8-3 at the break. However, UC Davis never managed to close in during the second period. Each team traded goals until the 49th minute, when Erica Evangelisti's free-position goal launched a 4-0 Hawk run to wrap up the contest.
The Aggies shot just 5-for-17 during the game, and committed 23 turnovers to Monmouth's 12 giveaways.
UC Davis finishes its East Coast road trip with a game at St. Joseph's on Tuesday.
