Sophomore attacker Shannon Cross scored three goals while freshman Amanda Outcalt provided three assists, but UC Davis could not overcome an early deficit in a 12-8 loss to Drexel in a non-conference women’s lacrosse game at Vidas Field Sunday morning.
The Aggies move to 5-7 for the year. The Dragons even their season record to 5-5.
Cross led six total scorers for UC Davis, which outshot its host by a 28-20 margin. Senior attacker Melissa Kellan
added a goal and two assists. Sophomore midfielder Taylor Cuenin
matched senior Tess Kevorkian
with three caused turnovers while adding a game-high six ground balls. Junior Shannon Geary
led all players with five draw controls.
The Aggies struck first with a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of play, as Outcalt assisted Kellan and Kelsey DeJesus
on goals. However, Drexel responded with seven unanswered for the rest of the half to craft a 7-2 lead. Senior midfielder Devin Nihill scored two of her game-high four goals while Lauren Gerrie had a goal and two assists in that stretch for the Dragons.
UC Davis largely matched Drexel step for step in the second half but never approached by closer than a four-goal margin. Kate Fellner’s eight-meter conversion in the 45th minute brought the score to 9-5. The Aggies netted three goals in the final two minutes of play, with Kellan assisting on back-to-back in the final 29 seconds of play.
The Aggies held a 17-9 shooting edge after the halftime break, outdrew the Dragons by a 12-10 advantage and won 28 of the game’s 47 ground balls. However, UC Davis suffered from 24 turnovers, including 15 in the first half. Five of those miscues led directly to Drexel goals as part of the 7-0 run.
Cuenin’s three steals brought her weekend total to 13 and her season total to a school-record 42. She entered the game ranked second nationally in that category.
UC Davis returns to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play with a road game at Fresno State on Saturday.
