WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Despite a team-best three goals from Jaime Fitzpatrick, UC Davis was
unable to recover from an early 5-1 deficit as the No. 1 Aggies lost to
No. 4 West Chester in a women's collegiate lacrosse game Friday.
The loss snaps the Aggies' six-game winning streak, dropping to 7-4 on the
year. It is also the first against a D-II opponent during the 2003
season. The Golden Rams improve to 7-2 overall. UC Davis also stood atop
this week's NCAA South Region rankings, ahead of Longwood, Limestone and
WCU.
"We had trouble with our passing and catching and we had dropped
balls," said Aggie head coach Elaine Jones. "West Chester had
tough pressure defense but nothing like haven't seen already. We just weren't
executing -- I was baffled.
"Its unfortunate that we played that way. I just hope it doesn't
come back to haunt us."
Naomi Coffman posted two goals and an assist in the loss. Kate Hanson
also scored a pair of goal for UC Davis. Goalkeeper Kristen Braasch had
11 saves in net.
After a 5-1 deficit, UC Davis battled back to cut the halftime lead to
5-4, helped a goal in the final second before the intermission. But the
Golden Rams opened with a quick 3-0 run in the second half to push their
lead to 8-4. The Aggies cut that back to 8-7 going into the final minutes
before WCU added an insurance goal to seal the win.
UC Davis faces Millersville University on Saturday. The Marauders dropped
out of this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association
poll after two weeks at No. 10.
