Outcalt, DeJesus score hat tricks in loss at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior midfielder Kelsey DeJesus and freshman attacker Amanda Outcalt each scored three goals with an assist, but California broke loose from a 9-9 tie to take a 15-12 win over UC Davis in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Memorial Stadium Friday night.


The Aggies fall to 6-8 for the year and 2-3 in conference play. The Golden Bears improve to 4-10 overall and 2-3 in MPSF games.


Freshman Maddie Myers added two goals off the bench, while four other UC Davis players chipped in another goal apiece. DeJesus and freshman Kate Graham each picked up three ground balls while Myers posted a game-high five draw controls.


Sophomore midfielder Caroline Corzel netted five goals and two assists for Cal, while attacker Kirsten Swanson notched another four goals.


The Aggies never led in the game, falling into a 5-1 hole after back-to-back Swanson eight-meter goals in the eighth and 15th minutes. DeJesus scored two goals with Graham and Shannon Cross adding one to help bring UC Davis back to within a 7-5 deficit with five minutes left in the first half. The Aggies trailed 9-6 at the halftime break.


DeJesus, Myers and Outcalt scored in succession during the first seven minutes of the second half to equalize at 9-9. The Golden Bears quickly answered with their own 3-0 run from the 41st through 44th minutes, reclaiming a 12-9 advantage. Outcalt scored back-to-back later in the second half, bringing UC Davis to a one-goal deficit. However, Corzel hit a goal and assist in the final 3:14 to seal the win for Cal.


UC Davis and Cal each took 29 shots, and the Aggies actually held a slight edge in both draws (15-14) and turnovers (10-12).


The Aggies return home to host Oregon on Sunday. First draw is at noon.
