DAVIS, Calif. -
Junior midfielder Kate Fellner scored a goal and a career-high four assists while senior goalkeeper Lauren Ali posted 12 assists, but UC Davis saw its 9-5 lead give way to a 10-9 loss to Oregon in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women’s lacrosse action at Aggie Stadium on Sunday.
The Aggies fall to 6-9 for the year and 2-4 in conference play. The Ducks improve to 8-7 overall and 4-3 in MPSF games. Oregon also clinched a berth in the six-team MPSF tournament with the victory, leaving two spots up for grabs heading into the final week.
Senior Melissa Kellan
and sophomore Shannon Cross
each netted two goals to lead UC Davis, while freshman Amanda Outcalt
added a goal and three assists.
For the Ducks, senior Bella Pyne hit three goals while junior Cambi Cukar contributed three assists. Mariah Gatti, Jill Buzillaga and Shannon Williams each contributed two goals for UO. Freshman Maddie Clark relieved starter Becca Katzen at goalie in the 23rd minute and recorded four saves with just one goal allowed.
Fellner and Outcalt each had two assists in a 4-0 Aggie start to the contest. Kellan, Cross, freshman Maddie Myers
and junior Kelsey DeJesus
scored in succession during that run. The Ducks answered with three straight during the span of a minute, cutting the lead to 4-3 in the 13th minute. However, DeJesus recovered the ground ball after a blocked shot after the next draw, then assisted freshman Kate Graham
to make it 5-3 for the Aggies. A big save for Ali on one end paved the way for a pair of free-position attempts on the other, the second of which led to Outcalt’s feed to Fellner in the 17th minute.
Fellner later assisted Cross and Kellan on back-to-back scores, giving UC Davis an 8-4 lead. An Outcalt drive in the last 90 seconds set the halftime score at 9-5 for the Aggies.
The tide completely turned in the second half, as UC Davis went from shooting 8-for-12 in the first to 0-for-8 in the second. Oregon also dominated the draw after the break, winning 5 of 6 such opportunities as part of its overall 14-7 edge. Ali was the lone bright spot for the Aggies in the second half, as she posted seven saves and a ground ball pickup in the frame.
UC Davis returns to action on Friday with a crucial home MPSF game against San Diego State, which also holds a 2-4 conference record.
