DAVIS, Calif. --- Junior attack Collette Spencer scored five goals
and added an assist to help Saint Mary's College pile up seven second-half
goals en route to a 10-5 win over UC Davis in a non-conference women's lacrosse
game at Aggie Field Saturday.
The Aggies fall to 9-6 on the season. The Gaels improve to 8-9 overall.
Both teams compete in the Mountain Pacific Lacrosse League; however, Saturday's
game was a non-conference matchup.
Alison High added two goals and an assist for Saint Mary's, while Thera
Luce and Stephanie French each posted 1-1-2 lines. Goalkeeper Megan Ceccotti
nabbed 11 saves in net for the Gaels.
"We had woeful shooting. We couldn't put the ball in the net,"
said Aggie head coach Elaine Jones. "No matter how many times we told
them to fake first before shooting, we didn't do it."
UC Davis shot just 5-for-22 for the day, getting a goal each from Naomi
Coffman, Nicole Frantz, Leslie Kado, Jackie Milhoan and Jaime Fitzpatrick.
Frantz's goal, which came on a free-position opportunity in the final minutes
of the first half, is her first of her career.
Spencer got SMC started in the seventh minute with a free-position goal,
then added another less than a minute later on a feed from Luce. She completed
her hat trick at the 22:18 mark in the first, giving her team a 3-1 lead.
Frantz then converted her shot with 88 seconds before the break to cut the
Gael lead to 3-2.
UC Davis tied the game on the first possession of the second half when
Leslie Kado drilled a free-position attempt at 31:25, but Luce responded
on the ensuing draw to give SMC a 4-3 lead. Then Milhoan, an Aggie defender
who rarely gets to work beyond the opponent's restraining line, converted
a pass from Fitzpatrick to tie the game at 4-4.
Saint Mary's took control of the game offensively, scoring five unanswered
goals over the next 13:11. Spencer had two scores and her assists in that
span, which came to an end when Fitzpatrick hit her free-position goal at
51:00.
UC Davis goalie Kristen Braasch faced 31 shots in net, saving nine of
the 19 on goal.
The Aggies' next action is the MPLL tournament at Stanford on May 3-4.
UC Davis, the fourth seed in the league, will face the host Cardinal at
1 p.m. on that Saturday.
