MORAGA, Calif. - Midfielder Kelsey Twist and attackers Sarah Bach and Daphne Patterson each performed hat tricks as Stanford rode a 9-1 first-half run to a 14-6 win over UC Davis in the first of two semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse tournament at Saint Mary's College Friday.
The Aggies move to 10-8 on the season. The 19th-ranked Cardinal, who are also the top seed in the tournament, improve to 12-5 overall.
Sophomore Katie McMahon scored four goals to lead UC Davis offensively. This output brings her season total up to 66, which ties her own single-season record. It also lifts her career sum to 132, tying her with Allison Stonebarger for the school's career standard.
Freshman Hilary Harkins earned the starting nod in the Aggie cage and posted a career-best 19 saves in 33 shots on goal.
UC Davis led briefly when McMahon scored a free-position goal in the fourth minute of play. However, Stanford tied the game on a MIchelle DeChant-assisted goal to Twist, then took the lead on back-to-back free-position shots by Megan McClain and Liz Piselli during the 7th and 19th minutes, respectively.
Tiffany Lee scored the Aggies' second goal of the game at 18:32, but Bach answered 18 seconds later on an unassisted score. That goal launched a 6-0 stretch over the next nine minutes for the Cardinal, establishing a 9-2 lead.
McMahon scored a goal in the final minute of the first half, then another in the third minute of the second, cutting the lead to 9-4. UC Davis never approached any closer as Patterson and Twist each scored two goals in Stanford's second frame.
UC Davis will face the loser of the UC Berkeley-Denver semifinal game at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
