WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The UC Davis women's rowing team opened the 2005 spring season in winning fashion as the Aggies swept all four of their races at the Davis Invitational Rowing Tournament (D.I.R.T.) at the Port of Sacramento on Sunday morning.

UC Davis posted convincing wins in each of the varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and second novice eight races over their 2,000-meter home course, each winning by at least seven seconds.

The varsity eight opened the victorious day, posting a time of 6 minutes, 51.16 seconds to claim first in its race against UC Santa Barbara and Santa Clara. UCSB was second in 6:58.52 while Santa Clara was third in 7:20.91.

The second novice eight continued the winning by crossing in 7:19.72, nearly 35 seconds ahead of second-place UC Santa Barbara which finished in 7:53.88. The junior varsity eight then won a dual matchup with UC Santa Barbara, clocking a time of 7:03.65 which was well ahead of the Gauchos' 7:14.91.

The novice eight concluded the morning with a victory as well, finishing in 7:15.77 with Sonoma State in second in 7:27.60, UC Santa Barbara a close third in 7:28.44 and Santa Clara taking fourth in 7:37.25.

"I thought we had a very solid start to our season," said Aggie head coach Emily Plesser. "We did some work on the course on Friday and all boats improved their times today."

The racing began a busy 2005 schedule for UC Davis which will highlight its season with trips to the San Diego Crew Classic and to Lake Natoma for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association, Pacific Coast Rowing Association and Pac-10 Championships, and a cross-country trip for the Knecht Cup in Camden, N.J. The Aggies will also have their annual matchup with Sacramento State on April 23.

UC Davis returns to action next Sunday when they face Humboldt State at Lake Natoma.
