WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The UC Davis women's varsity eight crew posted a time of 6 minutes, 49.55 seconds at the Port of Sacramento on Saturday morning, beating visiting San Diego State by 13 seconds and leading four wins by Aggie rowers over the Aztecs.

Besides the varsity eight, UC Davis also posted wins in the second varsity eight (6:55.85), novice eight (7:10.03) and varsity four (7:45.86) races. San Diego State (7.24.20) edged the Aggies by less than a second in an exciting second novice eight race.

"It was a great day of racing for UC Davis," said interim head coach Carissa Adams. "The entire team made improvements from last week. I felt the varsity eight looked really strong and controlled. Our goal was to stay composed and consistent for the entire race and I believe we accomplished this."

The varsity eight win avenged a loss to the Aztecs from last year when San Diego State beat the Aggies by three seconds. UC Davis, however, returned the favor this season by covering the 2,000-meter course in 6:49.55 - its fastest time of the early spring season - while the Aztecs finished in 7:02.60.

Racing in the Aggies' varsity eight boat were Katherine Cobarrubia at cox' Sunny Caldwell at stroke, Sarah Kay at seven, Heidi Okowitz at six, Vanessa Cuellar at five, May Roberts at four, Laura Kelleher at three, Amber Buntin at two, Angela Bruno at bow.

Like the varsity eight, the second varsity eight also had a season-best time after opening the season with a win at the Davis Invitational Rowing Tournament last Sunday.

Competing in UC Davis' second varsity eight were Tara Davis at coxswain, Liz Russo at stroke, Lucci Lautze at seven, Erica Southard at six, Darcy Ward at five, Sarah Schulze at four, Melissa Wong at three, Reva Birnbaum at two and Brooke Thomas at bow.

The Aggies and Aztecs split a pair of novice races at the Port of Sacramento with UC Davis winning the novice eight race in 7:10.03, three seconds in front of San Diego State which was close behind in 7:13.08. The teams contested a tough battle in the second novice eight race with San Diego State holding off a charging Aggie crew and winning in 7:24.20. UC Davis finished barely behind in 7:24.96.

"The novices did very well again today," said novice coach Tricia Blocher. "They knew going into practice this week they were going to face much tougher competition this weekend and they prepared all week for it.

"I was very happy with how hard both boats fought and executed their race plan during each of their races."

Rowing in the Aggies' novice eight boat were Krista Rindell at coxswain, Susan Crow at stroke, Alicia Foley at seven, Amanda Schoeneman at six, Jessie Adams-Shore at five, Claire Swanback at four, Elizabeth Bache at three, Delaney Chapman at two and Susan Novik at bow.

The teams also contested a varsity fours race with UC Davis winning in 7:45.86. San Diego State finished in 7:57.11. The crew consisited of Cobarrubia at cox, Buntin at stroke, Kay at three, Caldwell at two and Cuellar at bow.
