Hornet Rowers Best Aggies For Jean Runyon Cup

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State's varsity eight beat host UC Davis by just over seven seconds on Saturday at the Port of Sacramento, capturing the Jean Runyon Cup, awarded to the winner of the annual women's rowing dual between the rivals.

The win marked the sixth straight for the Hornets in the Jean Runyon Cup series.

The dual was the spring season opener for UC Davis, which last season won its second consecutive NCAA Division II Championship. The Aggies are in their first year of transition to NCAA Division I status.

The Hornets covered the 2,000-meter course at the Port of Sacramento in 6 minutes, 54.9 seconds, ahead of the Aggies which crossed in 7:02.2. While the Hornets got the better of UC Davis in the varsity eight race, the Aggies won the novice eight dual, finishing in 7:12.5, just over six seconds ahead of the Hornets which were timed in 7:18.7.

The teams split the second varsity eight and second novice eight races. Sacramento State won the junior varsity battle with a time of 7:08.26, while the Aggies finished in 7:15.4. UC Davis, however, captured the second novice eight dual with a time of 7:37.2, ahead of the Hornets who were timed in 7:48.2.

The racing was the first of two days for UC Davis, whose novice four and novice eight teams will participate on Sunday morning in the Davis Invitational Rowing Tournament, also at the Port of Sacramento. The novice four will race at 9 a.m. while the novice eight compete at 10 a.m.
