SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UC Davis women's rowing team varsity eight - narrowly edged Saturday for a spot in the Jessop-Whittier Cup grand final - came back on Sunday morning to win the event's petite final at the San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay Park.

The Aggies won the petite in a dual matchup with Villanova, crossing in 6 minutes, 56.20 seconds. Villanova was well behind in 7:13.51.

UC Davis' second varsity eight also raced in a petite final on Sunday, finishing a close second to Sacramento State. The Aggies finished the 2,000-meter course in 7:04.55, barely behind the Hornets who won the race in 7:03.80.

Tulsa was third in 7:11.24 while San Diego rounded out the top four in 7:12.34.

Both UC Davis boats cut time from their performances on Saturday. The varsity eight - which went under seven minutes in both races - was more than three seconds faster while the JV8 was nearly 26 seconds quicker on Sunday.

The San Diego Crew Classic brings together many of the top rowing programs in the country. The varsity eight moved up last year to the Jessop-Whittier Cup invitational division, facing several highly ranked crews.

The Aggies engaged in a close battle with Grand Valley and Radcliffe for the last two grand final spots during their prelim on Saturday but were edged by the pair at the finish line with barely more than a half-second separating the trio.

Radcliffe's rowing program is ranked 14th nationally.

UC Davis will return to competition on Apr. 10 when it hosts rival Sacramento State at the Port of Sacramento. The varsity eights for both schools will battle for the Jean Runyon Cup in their annual showdown.
