WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The UC Davis women's rowing varsity eight was timed in a season-best 6 minutes, 33.64 seconds at the Port of Sacramento on Sunday morning, beating San Diego State by nearly 16 seconds and posting the first of four wins against the Aztecs by Aggie crews.

UC Davis, which had not raced since early March, also won second varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four races. San Diego State posted its lone win in the second novice eight matchup.

The Aggies' time on Sunday morning was approximately 17 seconds faster than its season-opening effort at the Davis Invitational Rowing Tournament on Mar. 9 and provided a comfortable winning margin over San Diego State which crossed in 6:49.14.

"I think it'll give the varsity a lot of confidence going into the San Diego Crew Classic (next weekend)," said head coach Carissa Adams. "The conditions were great and the team performed well.

"Our goal was just to go out, be controlled and row our race plan and try to get the fastest time we could and I feel that they did that," she said.

The second varsity eight followed the varsity eight's opening win with a five-second victory over the Aztecs after being timed in 6:57.03. San Diego State finished in 7:02.06. The novice eight also posted a victory with its 6:55.88, just ahead of the Aztecs' mark of 6:59.91.

San Diego State broke the streak with its win in the second novice eight race, clocking a time of 7:12.19 with UC Davis finishing in 7:24.43. The Aggies' varsity four wrapped up the dual with a convincing win in 7:30.96, well ahead of the Aztecs who finished in 7:57.01.

"All the boats did really well," Adams said of the Aggies' efforts on Sunday morning.

UC Davis will return to competition next weekend when it travels to the San Diego Crew Classic at Crown Point Shores Park at Mission Bay. The regatta will welcome many of the top collegiate crews in the country for its two-day event which will host preliminaries on Saturday and finals on Sunday.
