UC Davis Advances To Cal Cup Grand Final For Second Straight Year

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The UC Davis women's varsity eight finished second in its preliminary heat of the Cal Cup on Saturday morning with a season-best time of 6 minutes, 47.57 seconds, qualifying for Sunday's grand final at the San Diego Crew Classic for the second consecutive year.

The Aggies' novice eight crew - UC Davis' only other entry at the large regatta - was fourth in its preliminary heat before taking second in the event's third final in 7:35.18.

Three preliminary heats comprised the Cal Cup on Saturday morning with the top two finishers in each race advancing to Sunday's grand final. UC Davis opened the 2,000-meter heat in strong fashion, covering the first 500 meters in 1:37.77, holding a slight lead over Navy which was timed in 1:38.32.

Navy, however, passed the Aggies at the midway point, going ahead by just under a second. Bucknell then battled back from third place to take a half-second lead over Navy heading into the final piece with UC Davis in third.

UC Davis finished with a strong push, covering the final 500 meters in 1:42.29, and placing second to Navy which won the race in 6:45.80. UC Davis also held off Bucknell which finished close behind in 6:47.89. The Aggies, who finished in less than seven minutes for the second time this season, bested their previous best time this year of 6:59.27, achieved against San Diego State on March 11.

UC Davis, which finished fifth in last year's Cal Cup grand final, will race in Sunday morning's final against Miami, St. Joseph's, Navy, Sacramento State and Kansas State. Race time is scheduled for 11 a.m.

The Aggies' varsity eight boat at the San Diego Crew Classic consists of coxswain Katherine Cobarrubia, Cassie Drotman at stroke, Becky Anderson at seven, Vanessa Cuellar at six, May Roberts at five, Rebecca Maier at four, Adina Farkash at three, Laura Kelleher at two and Amber Buntin at bow.



The Aggies' novice eight was solidly in third place after the first 1,000 meters of its preliminary race, trailing second-place San Diego State by just under five seconds but leading fourth-place Sonoma State by nearly the same margin.

UC Davis maintained its third-place position heading into the final 500 meters before being passed by USC for third. Oregon State (6:59.60) posted a commanding win by 20 seconds over San Diego State (7:19.68), USC was third in 7:23.65 and UC Davis took fourth in the six-boat race in 7:30.03.

The Aggies battled back from an early deficit in the novice eight third final, posting a time of 1:52.28 over the first 500 meters before jumping to second place at the midway point behind Sacramento State. The Hornets led the Aggies by nearly 10 seconds after 1,500 meters with UC Davis holding irs position over the final piece to take second.

Sacramento State was timed in 7:24.30, followed by UC Davis (7:35.18) and UC Irvine (7:40.84) in the top three.

UC Davis's novice eight lineup consisted of coxswain Tara Davis, Katie Foley at stroke, Libby Painter at seventh, Sarah Schulze at six, Angela Hatch at five, Anna Lung at four, Megan Mills at three, Melissa Fletcher at two and Amelia Lancaster at bow.
