Aggies Take Sixth In Tough Cal Cup Grand Final

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of Miami opened a nearly six-second lead heading into the final 500 meters of the grand final of the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday morning, eventually winning the race in which UC Davis placed sixth in 7 minutes, 17.61 seconds at Mission Bay.

Miami, which led after each 500-meter piece, covered the 2,000-meter course in 7:05.30 with Kansas State (7:08.58) coming in second and St. Joseph's (7:10.87) finishing third. Sacramento State was fourth (7:12.12) while Navy took fifth (7:14.68). Twenty-one crews began competition for the Cal Cup on Saturday morning.

UC Davis was in fifth place after the first 500 meters, posting a split of 1:45.13, just ahead of St. Joseph's and only a second behind Kansas State. The Aggies trailed Sacramento State for fifth place by a second at the halfway point, and after posting the third-fastest split (1:51.18) in the third piece, were less than a second behind fifth-place Navy heading into the final 500 meters. Navy, however, was able to hold off UC Davis down the stretch.

Miami, meanwhile, held a slight lead over Sacramento State after the opening quarter of the race, led St. Joseph's by 1.3 seconds midway and then posted a split of 1:49.14 to lead by almost six seconds after 1,500 meters. Kansas State had its fastest split (1:43.52) in the last piece to overtake St. Joseph's and move up to second.

UC Davis advanced to its second consecutive Cal Cup grand final with a second-place finish in its preliminary heat on Saturday morning, posting a season-best mark of 6:47.57. The Aggies' novice eight squad completed its competition on Saturday afternoon, finishing second in its' event's third final.

The Aggies' varsity eight boat at the San Diego Crew Classic consisted of coxswain Katherine Cobarrubia, Cassie Drotman at stroke, Becky Anderson at seven, Vanessa Cuellar at six, May Roberts at five, Rebecca Maier at four, Adina Farkash at three, Laura Kelleher at two and Amber Buntin at bow.



UC Davis returns to action on Saturday, hosting rival Sacramento State at the Port of Sacramento. The varsity eight will battle the Hornets for the Jean Runyon Cup, awarded annually to the winner of the Causeway showdown.
