Aggie Rowers Advance To Petite Finals At San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UC Davis women's varsity eight finished third Saturday morning in its preliminary heat of the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic in 7 minutes. 2.64 seconds, advancing to Sunday's petite final of the event being contested at Mission Bay.

The Aggies' novice eight finishing third in 7:25.27 of its preliminary heat of the Collegiate Novice Eight competition and also earned a spot in the petite final of its event on Sunday.

UC Davis' varsity eight trailed eventual winner Miami by just over a second after the first 500 meters after going 1:40.13 in the Cal Cup prelim. The Aggies were then timed in 5:15.28 heading into the final 500 meters, trailing Miami by a little more than five seconds and second-place Clemson by almost four seconds. UC Davis held its third position the remainder of the way, beating rival Sacramento State, which was fourth in 7:04.72.

Miami won the race in 6:56.40 with Clemson a close second in 6:57.59.

The Aggies' novice boat raced third to Washington and UCLA over the first 1,500 meters of racing during its preliminary heat and held its position down the stretch to advance to the petite final. UC Davis posted a time of 1:47.94 over the first 500 and was timed at 3:40.14 midway, just ahead of USC which eventually finished fourth. Washington won the race in 7:01.28, easily beating UCLA which was second in 7:19.02.

UC Davis' varsity eight will race at 11:10 a.m. on Sunday while the novice eight will race at 8. The San Diego Crew Classic is one of the largest regattas in the country, featuring men's and women's teams from throughout the United States.

The varsity eight captured the Gilman/Muliken Cup at last year's event, contested by Division II and III teams.
